Sugar Baby Review

Dark Romance

Scout’s Report

Emery is four days out from the rest of her life. She has scholarships she earned the hard way, a plan to graduate, get her CPA, and land a stable accounting job…and fewer than $10 in her account until her meal card activates. Then her designer-handbag-toting roommate introduces her to SugarLife, an app for women who want the taste of a sugar daddy.

Intrigued, she begins swiping and comes across a $$$$ listing for four daddy doms seeking a baby girl to play with. She’s wary, but can’t stop thinking about it. $10,000 for one night? She’s been through worse, and it would set her up for practically her entire first year of college. She would have time to find another job later. It’s just one night, right?

Wayfarer’s Log

Sometimes you just want a good smutty interlude, and this one delivers. Sugar Baby is a short, fast, unapologetic dark romance that knows exactly what it is. And because Madison is an IRL domme who specializes in edging and O-denial, it’s not only a smutty interlude, but it’s educational too!

The thing that elevated this from “just smut” to “smut with a brain” for me was the emphasis on consent. Every scene is negotiated, and safewords are reiterated. The contract framework isn’t an afterthought, it’s the structural backbone of the whole premise. For a book that goes to some intense places, the care taken around consent made the darker kinks feel hot rather than exploitative. Thank you, Harley! I would love to see this idea in more romances.

This is a short book and the sex is back-half heavy, which makes total sense for the plot. The whole first half is setup, negotiation, and tension. When the scenes hit, they hit. I will say, though—the “daddy” element isn’t my personal kink, and I was a bit weirded out by it at first. But I’m a live and let live kind of person. If it’s what gets you going and it’s all consensual, then by all means. Accepting it for what it was allowed me to enjoy the book without it pulling me out. Your mileage may vary here depending on how you feel about the dynamic going in, and that goes for any of the kinks portrayed.

The orgasm denial storyline was interesting, and I learned afterward that it’s one of the author’s actual specialties. Once I knew that, the book got even better in retrospect. It’s essentially an accessible entry point into the BDSM world for readers who are curious, even in just their fantasies, but haven’t dipped in. I came out of it excited to read book two, where I expected more kinks to come into play. Spoiler for the series: I was right.

The four men are distinct from page one. Derek is the rigid, in-control daddy, Hudson the sweet doting one, Darcy the artistic kind one, and Xavier the one who doesn’t quite play by the same rules as the others. You don’t get deep backstory on any of them yet, but you get enough to tell them apart.

Emery herself isn’t the most compelling protagonist I’ve read, but she’s fine. She’s there and has some thoughts, and that’s okay for a series like this. The kink framework is doing the heavy lifting here, and she’s got more room to develop in the books to come. And speaking of Emery, the most improbable thing in this entire book was her finding the exact right information she was looking for as the first search result, every single time. Sure would be nice if any of us had that kind of search engine luck!

Voice of the Bard

I reread this series after the audiobooks were released, and it was just as fun! The voice actors did a great job bringing the characters to life. Each male narrator took on two of the daddies, but I could tell the difference easily enough. They definitely brought the sexiness and domination to the table, I was not disappointed. And I loved Emery’s voice, it was very fitting to her character!

Journey’s End

Sugar Baby is a fun, fast, surprisingly educational series opener that plays in a genre I don’t usually reach for, and won me over anyway. It’s not a deep character study or terribly plot-forward, and it doesn’t pretend to be either. It’s a smutty escape with a real BDSM framework behind it, and I moved on to book two the moment I finished. Maybe this means I should dry more dark romance out?

I’d recommend this for:

  • Reverse harem / why choose romance fans
  • BDSM and kink-forward dark romance readers who want an entry point
  • Anyone who values a consent-forward framework in their dark romance
  • Age gap enjoyers
  • Readers who don’t mind plot built around sex scenes rather than the other way around
  • Quick, binge-ready reads under 250 pages

Publisher’s Summary

Four Daddy Doms. Three hours. Ten Thousand Dollars. Who wouldn’t say yes to that?

I’m not going to bore you with my tragic backstory, because fuck that. I worked my ass off for the scholarships I have and the first day of the rest of my life is only four days away. My goal? Graduate college, get my CPA, and become an accountant. I know there are a few more steps, but that is my path because that shit is stable and will generate a more than generous living wage.

As compared to right now, when I have less than ten dollars in my account and my meal card doesn’t activate for another two days. In swoops my roommate with her designer handbags and freshly done hair. She introduces me to an app that is going to stop me from being a cliche broke college student.

SugarLife.
Go out to dinner with some old dudes for a couple hundred dollars? Fuck yes.
But then I see their date invitation.
Four daddies looking for a baby girl to share for the night.
Their list of bedroom requirements has me squeezing my thighs together and my thumb hitting the accept button before my brain can catch up.
And the kicker? They’re willing to pay me more money than I have ever had for a few hours between my legs.
I’ve done way worse things for less.
And I never saw a cent of that cash.
The more we chat, the more invested I get. I need to remind myself that it’s only for a few hours. One night. It’s not for forever.
They won’t want to keep me.
No one ever wants to keep me.

Sugar Baby is the first book in the Sugar Life series. It is a high-steam why choose romance with one baby girl, four daddy doms, one night of extreme pleasure, and the introduction into the darker aspects of the world of kink.
